Steve Buscemi Attacked in New York: Unprovoked Assault Leaves Actor Shaken

According to Steve Buscemi's spokesman, the blow to his face last week in New York City was unprovoked. According to the New York Post, Buscemi, 66, was on a Manhattan street on Wednesday morning when it occurred. A Kips Bay neighborhood employee who observed the incident told the newspaper, "I saw he was with a woman, and then through the corner of the window I saw him stumble and fall backwards." "He right away got up and ran in the opposite direction." The AP notes that the New York Police Department acknowledged that an attack had occurred, but did not identify the actor, and that an investigation is still under progress. There have been no arrests to far, and the perpetrator ran away.

Brooklyn native Buscemi "was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city," according to a statement from his publicist. "He is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York." He received medical attention at the hospital for swelling around his left eye and facial injuries. Michael Stuhlbarg, who costarred with Buscemi on Boardwalk Empire, is another victim of the current spate of sporadic assaults that have been hitting New York City. A guy Stuhlbarg pursued after hurling a rock at him in March struck him in the back of the neck. The individual in question was taken into custody.
